The haitian government must prioritize the completion of Antoine Simon International Airport

For decades, Haiti has struggled to unlock its full economic and tourism potential. While much attention has been focused on the capital and the northern region, the southern peninsula remains one of the country’s most beautiful and underdeveloped treasures. The completion and modernization of Antoine Simon International Airport in Les Cayes should become a national priority because it represents one of the most important economic development opportunities available to Haiti today.

The South Department is home to some of Haiti’s most spectacular attractions, including pristine beaches, historic sites, mountains, waterfalls, and offshore islands. Destinations such as Île-à-Vache, Port Salut, Camp-Perrin, and Pic Macaya have the potential to attract thousands of international visitors each year.

However, the lack of a fully operational international airport makes access difficult and discourages tourists from visiting the region. Completing Antoine Simon International Airport would allow direct international flights from North America, the Caribbean, and Europe, making Southern Haiti a competitive tourism destination.

Tourism creates jobs quickly and generates revenue for hotels, restaurants, transportation companies, tour operators, artisans, and local communities.

Airport infrastructure is not simply about aviation; it is an economic engine. The completion of the airport would create construction jobs immediately and long-term employment opportunities in aviation, security, customs, transportation, hospitality, and tourism services.

A modern international airport would encourage private investment in hotels, resorts, restaurants, shopping centers, and entertainment facilities throughout the region. Small businesses and entrepreneurs would benefit from increased visitor spending, creating a multiplier effect that strengthens the local economy.

Every successful tourism destination begins with accessibility, and accessibility begins with transportation infrastructure.

Southern Haiti is rich in agricultural production, including fruits, coffee, cacao, seafood, and other products that have export potential. A fully functional international airport would provide farmers and exporters with faster access to international markets.

Fresh products could reach consumers abroad more efficiently, increasing profits for local producers while reducing transportation costs and spoilage. This would encourage agricultural investment and create new economic opportunities for rural communities.

The airport could become a strategic logistics hub connecting Southern Haiti with regional and international markets.

A modern international airport serves more than tourists and businesses. It is also a critical asset during emergencies, natural disasters, and humanitarian operations.

Haiti is vulnerable to hurricanes, earthquakes, floods, and other natural disasters. A fully equipped airport in Les Cayes would allow emergency personnel, medical supplies, rescue teams, and humanitarian aid to reach affected areas much more quickly.

By expanding aviation infrastructure outside Port-au-Prince, Haiti would strengthen national resilience and reduce dependence on a single transportation hub.

For too long, economic opportunities have been concentrated in and around Port-au-Prince. The completion of Antoine Simon International Airport would help decentralize development and create opportunities in the South Department.

A stronger regional economy would reduce migration pressure toward the capital, encourage local investment, and improve living standards for thousands of families. Development should not be limited to one part of the country when the South possesses enormous untapped potential.

Investing in the airport sends a powerful message that all regions of Haiti deserve modern infrastructure and economic opportunity.

The completion of Antoine Simon International Airport is not simply an aviation project, it is a national development strategy. It would stimulate tourism, create jobs, increase exports, improve disaster response capabilities, and promote balanced economic growth across Haiti.

Every year that this project remains unfinished represents lost opportunities, lost investments, and lost revenue for the Haitian people. The Government of Haiti must recognize the strategic importance of the airport and make the completion of its infrastructure and runway an urgent national priority.

The South of Haiti is ready for growth. What it needs now is the gateway that will connect its tremendous potential to the world.
