Barricades and burning tyres disrupt traffic in Haiti’s capital amid political tension
PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti — Barricades and burning tyres blocked major roads in several neighbourhoods of Port-au-Prince on Wednesday morning, disrupting traffic and forcing many businesses and services to shut down, witnesses said.
The incidents were reported in areas including Bourdon, Pèlerin and Pétion-Ville, key parts of the metropolitan area where access routes were temporarily paralysed.
Haiti’s National Police said officers had been deployed to clear the roads and restore order but did not immediately provide details on arrests or damage.
No group has claimed responsibility for the actions, which come as political tensions rise ahead of Feb. 7, a date widely viewed as marking the end of the current de facto government’s mandate.
The unrest has heightened concerns among residents and authorities about further disruptions in the coming days.
