Remarks by
Ambassador Francisco O. Mora
November 13, 2024
Thank you, Mr. Chair, and good afternoon, distinguished representatives.
On behalf of the United States, I would like to express our sincere gratitude to all member states for their collaborative spirit and shared commitment, leading to the adoption of this resolution in support of Haiti’s request for a United Nations Peacekeeping Operation. Today’s adoption of the resolution by consensus embodies the strength of this council when we work together toward shared principles of peace, stability, and the advancement of democracy across our hemisphere.
This resolution is a powerful message of solidarity to the people of Haiti, who face profound challenges daily — from gang violence and political instability to devastating humanitarian crises. Our collective endorsement sends a clear signal: Haiti does not stand alone.
Together, we reaffirm our support for the transitional Haitian government and its courageous call for a peacekeeping mission that promises greater security and an opportunity for Haitians to rebuild their democratic institutions.
We commend the contributions of each OAS member state that has supported the Multinational Security Support mission. Your unwavering commitment makes a profound difference. For those who continue to consider support for this mission, we extend our encouragement and stand ready to collaborate as we support a safe and prosperous future for Haiti.
As this resolution underscores, peacekeeping alone is not the answer. Long-term stability in Haiti requires the international community to work together on a comprehensive approach that addresses the underlying social, political, and economic conditions in the country. The United States is committed to strengthening these efforts, working alongside all of you to bring Haiti closer to the peace and democracy its people deserve.
Finally, I want to thank the Permanent Missions of Haiti and all the co-sponsors of this resolution for their leadership and vision in pushing this resolution forward. Thank you.
