This is Harrington Rigaud. A close family friend, former director of the Haiti National Police Academy.

I’ll never forget the time we rode out to Montrouis, his family home, and I said to him, « You’ve traveled to the US, Canada. You could get residence there easily if you want to. Why are you still here with the police? »

He told me because he loves Haiti, and if he dies in its service of the country, so be it.

A few years ago he was cowardly gunned down in cold blood in the streets of Port-au-Prince.

So you’ll excuse me if I have no tolerance or patience for these social media LARPers sitting comfortably in their homes outside of Haiti who suddenly act like they care about the people of Haiti.

The men and women of the Police Nationale d’Haïti and Forces Armées d’Haïti put their lives on the line every single day to try to provide security for the people – often going long periods with no pay, overworked, suffering from PTSD, targeted daily just for putting on the uniform – these are the ones who deserve the respect and support of all Haitians. Even the sniveling children of the djaspora who act like keyboard warriors and super patriots the moment these brave men and women dare request any support they can get, while you sit comfortably abroad without a clue of the daily reality of Haiti, unwilling to go do the job they do.

Set aside the politics. There are plenty of reasons to be skeptical of the entire political class, including the current de facto PM.

But if you love Haiti so much, show some respect to the brave men and women of the police and army – especially the ones who go into neighborhoods where you wouldn’t dare set foot to try to restore order.

RIP Harrington. Nou p ap janm bliye w. ????????????
