Haiti: Armed Groups Advance in Arcahaie as Hotel Fire Reported in Léogâne

Armed groups pushed into restricted areas of Arcahaie early Thursday, overwhelming local vigilance brigades. Residents described a rapid incursion that triggered widespread panic and forced several neighbourhoods to shut down activity.

In Léogâne, a well-known hotel was engulfed in flames. Management reported that the fire began on the upper floor, though the cause remains unclear. Local authorities have not commented, and independent confirmation is still pending.

Political tensions are also rising in Port-au-Prince. Persistent reports suggest a rift between Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aimé and members of the Transitional Presidential Council. Several CPT figures are said to be considering his removal, accusing him of consolidating power without delivering meaningful security improvements.

Fils-Aimé, in office for nearly a year, continues to face criticism over the Kenskoff episode, which opponents cite as emblematic of the government’s inability to prevent the spread of armed groups.

With less than two months before the CPT’s mandate expires, the debate over leadership inside the transitional structure has intensified. Analysts warn that the institutional friction may complicate any coordinated response to the expanding gang presence along the western corridor.

Further updates are expected later in the day as more information becomes available.
