Le dernier homme à quitter l’Afghanistan : il s’agit du Général (2 stars) et vétéran de l’armée depuis 30 ans, Christopher Donahue. Il est le dernier soldat américain à être monté à bord d’un avion à l’aéroport de Kaboul.

Via son compte Twitter, le Pentagone a publié une image de M. Donahue quelques instants avant qu’il ne monte à bord de l’avion militaire qui a décollé lundi soir de l’aéroport international Hamid Karzai de Kaboul, alors que les États-Unis mettaient fin à la plus longue guerre de leur histoire.

Le chef du Commandement central américain (CENTCOM), le Général Frank McKenzie, a annoncé lundi l’achèvement du retrait d’Afghanistan et la fin de l’évacuation des Afghans vulnérables, des personnes américaines et des ressortissants de pays tiers.

  • Maj Gen Christopher Donahue, 52, was the last soldier to leave Afghanistan
  • He flew out on the final flight at 3:29pm Washington time on Tuesday, or one minute before midnight in Kabul
  • Donahue is the commander of the 82nd Airborne Division, based at Fort Bragg, North Carolina
  • His division is the nation’s Immediate Response Force, and they are positioned to deploy anywhere in the world within 18 hours of notification
  • Donahue has deployed 17 times in support of operations in Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, Libya, and Eastern Europe
  • He served in the special forces before studying at Harvard and working in the Pentagon as special assistant to the chairman of the joint chiefs of staff
  • Donahue, a two star general, deployed to Afghanistan in mid August and was given the job of maintaining security at the airport
